Tolerance, multiculturalism, nonjudgementalism
and diversity are the new moral codes preached
by Hollywood (TV and movies) and the media (radio,
newspapers, magazines, etc.). Racism, sexism,
homophobia and religious intolerance are the new
taboos that Hollywood and the American media created
and are vigorously enforcing.
Stars, newscasters, talk show
hosts and other celebrities endlessly spew forth
the new morality out one side of their mouths
while the industry they represent and work for
practices and lives the bigotry and hatred that
it condemns.
The textbook example of the
incessant hypocrisy, racial stereotyping and bigotry
that Hollywood and the media regurgitate is the
portrayal of underworld crime bosses as Italian
and primarily Sicilian Italian. The Godfather
series of movies was nothing more than bigoted,
ethnic sliming of Sicilians by the movie moguls
in Hollywood.
The media and Hollywood has
created in the minds of Americans, through incessant
propaganda, that the Sicilian words, Mafia and
La Cosa Nostra, mean organized crime, hence organized
crime is an abomination defined by Italians and
Sicilians.
Whenever an Italian or Sicilian
mob boss is convicted of a crime, his picture
and name gets splashed prominently across the
front pages of major national newspapers for days,
tabloids for weeks and magazines for months. This
is another form of ethnic and racial smearing.
Included in this sullying of Italians and Sicilians
is ridiculing their Catholicism (a form of religious
bigotry) by the media and Hollywood. These “entertainment
sources” repetitiously portray mobsters
devoutly going to mass then committing a heinous
crime immediately thereafter.
The proof that the bigoted
ethnic stereotyping of Italians and Sicilians
is effective in America is because Gotti, Luciano
and Capone are familiar mobster names to the average
American while mobsters from other ethnic groups
are unknown. This repetitious, unending, Nazi-like
propaganda and hateful stereotyping of Italians
and Sicilians perpetuates the negative stereotype
that all Italians and Sicilians are congenitally
inclined toward crime and thuggish behavior.
Obviously, the people who perpetuate
this racism and hate are probably not Italian,
Sicilian or Catholic! When are lay and ordained
Catholics going to collectively ask who these
hateful and prejudiced people are in Hollywood
and the media? When will we demand an explanation
for this hate speech and defamation, especially
if the movers and shakers in Hollywood and the
media are not Catholic, Italian or Sicilian?
If they are from different
ethnic or religious groups, then when will they
admit who they are and portray themselves as hatefully
and stereotypically as they portray Catholics,
Italians and Sicilians?
When will Hollywood and the
media apologize to the Catholics, Italians and
Sicilians for the racist caricatures and stop
perpetuating bigotry, hatred and division in the
United States? Years of apology are due so the
bigots and haters in Hollywood and the media do
not revert back to their racist and vindictive
natures.
