Rabbi Shelton Donnell of Temple Beth Shalom in
Orange County California received a papal award
initiated by John Paul II for "civil courage."
A quick check shows that the Rabbi has been recognized
by the Anti Defamation League (ADL) that is interested
primarily in "stopping the defamation of
the Jewish people." The ADL, as you recall,
savaged Mel Gibson for producing "The Passion
of the Christ". Rabbi Donnell has been known
to sponsor Seder meals with other groups as a
form of public relations for Judaism.
The
story is rather sparse in details as to what
occurred during the presentation, but the concern
is that this awarding of a great honor sends the
wrong message. If the award is given for civil
courage, there are countless pro-lifers who exhibit
civil courage daily by standing up to the truth
yet they get no recognition. It is disheartening
that the countless workers in the vineyards of
life are not recognized and that thousands of
honest, decent Roman Catholics are ignored.
Awarding non-Catholic for that
matter, without lecturing these people as a minimum
on the need to convert to Roman Catholicism, is
to allow these people to live in error. The result
may be ultimately damnation of these souls, if
not the souls of the church princes responsible
for effecting the award. The message sent to the
world, and especially to Roman Catholics, is that
it is okay to be another religion. Not exactly
evangelization.
The Church heirarchy has to
condition these awards on acceptance of the Faith,
or at least give the awards to the most deserving
— Roman Catholics living for, suffering
for, and dying for the Faith.
